Birth control for men: When it comes to developing a male Pill,
most scientists have pursued two strategies: Either find a (reversible)
way to block hundreds of millions of sperm from reaching the egg, or
(temporarily) prevent the swimmers from being produced in the first place.
Research has been slow-going, but recent studies have shown that a
combination of testosterone and progesterone appears to inhibit sperm
production—making option number two a real possibility.
When we might see it: Five to ten years. The World Health
Organization is currently sponsoring a clinical trial of a hormonal
injection, and a U.S. study is testing a hormonal gel that's absorbed
through the skin.

http://stanford.wellsphere.com/general-medicine-article/male-birth-control/670035?query=Permanent+Birth+Control Chinese researchers are using testosterone injections as a form of male birth control and it seems to be working. USA Today reports that the results will appear in the June issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. More work has to be done and long-term side effects needs to be teased out but the regimen looks promising. Word has it that many Major League Baseball players are very interested in this type of contraception. It's not that they want the testosterone injections to hit the ball farther but they just want to control the planet's population (and hit the ball farther).

Many consumers just assume the company owns the exact match name of the product in a .com and simply visit it (Direct Navigation).
“The state of contraception, especially in the USA, is embarrassingly primitive,” says Eric Liebner, 38. “I feel it’s extremely irresponsible of the medical and pharmaceutical communities to have placed the absolute majority of contraceptive options upon the female.”
Like many men, Liebner is frustrated with his lack of choices when it comes to contraception—so much so that he recently participated in an inter-vas device study. Though it was unsuccessful, he chalks it up to “taking one for the team.”
“All the men I've talked to about contraceptive options would rather take responsibility for it,” he says. “That way males know that effective contraception is being used. We would rather take control.”
Fortunately, inroads are being made into the world of male contraception–from hormonal and non-hormonal oral medications, to implants. But what are the options and when can men like Liebner hope to see them?
Why Do We Need Male Contraception?
Most of the current contraception options are aimed at women, and all of the methods have inherent limitations. Take the friendly little diaphragm. Know anyone who still uses one? That’s because they have a frighteningly high six to 20 percent failure-rate according to a National Women’s Health Center report from 2005.
So, how about the pill? Its low failure rate has made it one of the most popular options, but outside of the world’s wealthier countries, shelling out $35-$50 per month is an economic strain for most women. There are also environmental concerns about the synthetic estrogens in birth control pills being passed into waterways and, in turn, on to fish and other marine life whose reproductive abilities might be disrupted.
Men have it even worse when it comes to controlling their fertility. “Vasectomy is permanent, and condoms are not foolproof,” says Elaine Lissner, director of the Male Contraception Information Project (MCIP). “A reversible, reliable long-term method would meet a big need.”
Christina Wang MD, the program director at the UCLA General Clinical Research Center, has researched male contraceptive options for over 20 years. She says it’s important for men to have control over their fertility in order to control the world’s population growth, and to raise awareness about their bodies. “If men have to look into contraception, then they would learn more about their own reproductive systems and health,” she says.
New Options
According to surveys conducted by the MCIP, 66 percent of men gave an “unequivocal yes” when asked if they wanted new contraceptive choices. Here are the vitals on a few of the more promising options being developed.
Name: RISUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance)
Type: Vas-based
How It Works: It’s like a vasectomy, only reversible. Doctors inject a
polymer gel into the vas deferens as opposed to the old snip-snip. The plug
both blocks sperm and kills them as they go by.
Status: The phase III clinical trial for RISUG began in India this year. So
far it is not available outside of India, despite its potential to help men
globally. The Indian government and RISUG’s inventor are looking into what
needs to be done to get clinical trials rolling in other countries.
Name: Nifedipine
Type: Non-hormonal Oral Contraceptive
How It Works: Men take a pill that impairs their sperm’s ability to
penetrate a woman’s egg.
Status: It’s approved in the U.S. as a high blood pressure and migraine
medication, and its contraceptive effects are being investigated,
spearheaded by Susan Benoff, the doctor who first noticed the drug’s
contraceptive effects.
Name: MHC’s (Male Hormonal Contraceptives)
Type: Hormonal Contraceptive
How It Works: Like the female pill, a combination of hormones are ingested
that in turn suppress sperm production (as opposed to ovulation supression
in the female version). Researchers are leaning towards an injection that
would last about four months, instead of a pill form.
Status: In Europe, some versions are estimated to be about five to ten years
from reaching the market.
DeMANd:
"We used to talk about men 'sharing the burden' of contraception— but
these days, many men talk about wanting 'control.' Men want to control their
own destinies,” says Liebner.
Christopher Murphy, 30, agrees. “There are too few pro-active choices for men,” he says. “I will continue to use condoms if the need arises, although I don't enjoy using them as much as I enjoy not using them. But even with the sensual enjoyment aspect of condoms aside, they don't have as many desirable characteristics as RISUG.”
He says that the relatively short and simple administration procedure, long-lasting results, and ease of reversal make RISUG appealing. The fact that it is non-hormonal is also a plus for him, as RISUG wouldn’t have any undesirable systemic consequences that might come with pills. Liebner is also looking forward to something like RISUG becoming an option.
“I think it is a travesty of our modern age that more work hasn't been done to develop contraceptive measures for men,” he says. “Even more so considering the many side-effects often suffered by women who use the currently available birth control methods. I would leap at the opportunity if something along the lines of RISUG were made available.”

Seems every time the issue of pharma releasing a male birth control pill comes
up, the first thing that pops on everyone's lips, regardless of gender, is a
joke or quip about how men can't be trusted to take the things, so why would we
even make them?
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2010-02/marijuana-research-offers-new-hope-male-birth-control-pill The male birth control pill has lingered for years tantalizingly just out of reach, in the realm where rumor meets science. Recently developed hormonal and mechanical contraceptives never found an audience, serving only to highlight the absence of a male pill. Now, an examination of how smoking pot lowers fertility may make the male pill more than a persistent rumor.
